Solstice and Stevia the World Keeps Turning

This first day of the summer is when the North Pole is at its maximum tilt and slant towards the sun. The sun reaches its highest point in our sky, the warmth and light intensify in our northerner climes. We experience the longest day and the shortest night. As our world leans in towards the light, these turn and returns are symbolic of lessons that return, must be learned and relearned. What I learned on Spring Break – Food Matters

Vegetable TartIt was a cold and blustery windy day. The first day of spring had sprung, and Easter had hitherto blossomed. On this windswept afternoon, I did something I seldom do, I committed to sitting down for two hours to watch a moving picture: a movie as my grandparents deemed it, otherwise known as a film. This movie by Michael Moore is his newest and shines a bright spotlight on what life is like in countries that don’t spend an inordinate amount of money on their military. Instead, the wealth of these nations is dedicated to social services, human decency, and happiness, the fair distribution of wealth and of course good food. Continue reading

GMO CornI recently had someone ask me to explain what GMO’s really are. What is the entire hullabaloo really about? Why clamor for labeling when we have been engineering genes for thousands of years?

The question made me realize that I can’t assume I have an audience always well versed in such details. Thus it is always good to clarify and cover the basics. All aboardThere is no question; we are living in a time of rapid and bewildering change. Our populations are booming, resources are dwindling, and the planet is warming. Technology is charging ahead enhancing our connectivity with each other and the environment. We are just beginning to understand the impact that years of industrial revolutionary wars have had on the environment and our humanity. In place of government, it is business that must take the lead in re-imagining the way we utilize our natural resources and the way we treat and our workers and our communities. It’s Time for Transparency: The Consumer Has Been Heard!

Right to KnowThese past few days have been amazing! Years of work fighting for transparency in our food culminated in several very significant wins.  First, the DARK Act (Deny Americans the Right to Know) was defeated in the Senate and then one of the U.S.’s largest food companies, General Mills, and several others announced that they are going to label genetically modified ingredients in all their products sold in the U.S. For all of you who care about this issue, those who have dialed and called, written and tweeted for transparency, this is your week of accomplishment.
