An Ode, an Ask and a Recipe for The Early Girl Dry Farmed Tomato

Those early girls, they get me every time.

Those sweet young firmed-skinned beauties, blushing with the deepest blood-red fluids

that issue forth from their skin. 

Punctuating and protecting a burst of seed and flavors that take me to the early taste of spring entranced with hints of late summer.

Their tasty tentacles embrace my culinary imagination.

How to Eat Well in 2018 and Stay Within a Budget

 Consuming the news these past weeks, I was served up a ration of New Year’s food columns that all revolve around saving money. The titles lazy-Susan through my newsfeed: “5 Ways to Stop Blowing your Budget on Food” or “How to Save Money on Groceries every Month.”

While I digest their content on saving coupons and planning meals around what’s in flyers, it leads me to ponder…Should we not instead be asking how to eat well in 2018 and stay within our means?

Let’s make every day Food Day

Food Day -MAP-2013It says a lot about our eating habits that we need to set aside a day to remind us all to eat real. Less than two hundred years ago, most of our ancestors grew and harvested everything they ate. Before the days of refrigeration and processed food, eating real was about surviving. Many of our culinary favorites are derived from ways of cooking, preserving or fermenting food straight from the source.
