Climate Change Takes Center Stage at Expo East Next Week

The world

As I write this, Dorian, whose winds are the strongest ever recorded so far north in the Atlantic Ocean, is laying waste to the Bahamas. It threatens to wreak havoc along the Eastern States.

The Amazon rainforest continues to burn, threatening the very survival of many species – including ourselves.

July was the hottest month on record for the planet, edging out the previous record-holder in July 2016. The record warmth shrank Arctic and Antarctic sea ice to historic lows.

Next week I travel to Expo East in Baltimore – and yes, I must ride a carbon belching chariot – but my focus will be on ways to reverse this climate emergency through food and agriculture.

Eat, Play, Learn: My Annual Pilgrimage to Natural Products Expo-East

Many of us pass the last days of summer making an annual pilgrimage to the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. We don’t come to swim through the aquarium or catch a fly ball at Camden Yards. This historic seaport is the place where all things natural and organic gather to foment and foster the trade. It’s the place to whet your business appetite with new products, educational forums and networking opportunities. Making the journey is well worth the sore feet and lack of sleep—it’s the place to make new friends and reacquaint with old buddies, assuring good business prevails. Eat Party Learn Expo EastThere’s a slight nip and slant of light in the air which means Natural Products Expo East is nigh. As the autumnal equinox nears, many of us will be trundling off to Baltimore by the harbor to meet and showcase our products. Not only do we sample, slurp and sniff the dizzying array of organic and natural creations but we come to commune and learn. As I walk down the aisles this year, I will reflect on how far we have come in the last forty years. Indeed we have changed the way we eat, farm and clothe ourselves in a mere handful of decades, and I believe the shift has only just begun! What to Do at Expo East? Eat Party Learn!

Eat Party Learn Expo EastTwice each year the organic and natural brands come together to show off their newest tastes, smells, textiles and health supplements. Be it the latest organic corn chip or exotic elixirs, ointments and unguents, you can try it all here at the show!  When I first attended Expo West back in the 1980’s, it was a simpler show with much less buzz. Now we have two humungous shows, East and West, to highlight new products, celebrate our successes, and network and learn.
