Change Yourself Change The World

The Earth is a Living Whole system

From where I write, I see a forest dying—the legacy oaks drawn in gray lay down in droves, limb by lumbar. The madrones tilt and fall—even the redwoods tumble.

Not to sound like a privileged one during this time of war, future famines, and geopolitical unrest.

But I am sad and afraid right here and now as Climate Change transforms my world.

I have lived on this finger-ridge for 5 decades, and never have I witnessed native trees dying in such fever—especially at the tilt of the Earth defining this season.

We can all look outside and see that we must act swiftly if we’re going to prevent the worst of the climate catastrophes from coming.

While the outlook isn’t t positive, there are things we can do to bring the change we need to help turn the tide.

I believe one of the things holding us back is that we look for someone else to come up with solutions.

We can change the world by first changing behaviors and thoughts.

Is It Really Too Late to Regenerate Our World?

Photo Paul Nicklen National Geographic
Oil and gas development and climate change pose threats to narwhals.

I remember fondly snuggling up to David Attenborough’s Natural History series documenting the marvels of life on our planet. The wrinkles of subterranean rodents, the curious twists of a narwals tooth, from the great barrier reef to simple tide pools, he filled me with wonder and hope.

Then on February 23, 2021, Sir David Attenborough spoke to the United Nations Security Council and said to the 15 members, “There is no going back. No matter what we do now, it’s too late to avoid climate change, and the poorest, the most vulnerable, those with the least security are now certain to suffer.”

Then and there, I decided to write a strongly worded letter to myself and ask, what is the world doing to mitigate this impending disaster?

Organic Milk is a Better Choice and a Path to Change

Before the Agricultural Revolution, some 10,000 years ago, hardly anybody drank milk—unless it was from their own mother. As our ancestors domesticated grains and animals, all began to change. By the 5th century in western Europe, milk from both cows and sheep became quite popular.

But it wasn’t until the 20th century that we embraced milk like a stampede of heifers. My father drank a glass of milk with every meal, my grandmother churned butter, and we enjoyed a brimming bowl of ice cream every night.

It was a paradigm shift in thinking—drinking milk became a symbol of nutrition and safety, thanks to Louis Pasteur’s revolutionary pasteurization process.

Today we drink far less milk than we did in the middle of the last century—in fact, the dairy industry is in udder ruins. Small dairies are closing because of changing consumer trends, trade tensions, and, most importantly, a century-long industry consolidation.

Organic milk offers a drop of hope for dairy farmers and consumers alike.

Lessons from A Master of Regenerative Thinking – Albert Lusk

I attended a virtual honoring of Albert Lusk this week. Many old friends were on the call – all touched by Albert, so many of them were instrumental in the growth of organic food and agriculture.

We were young and audacious – believing we could change the world. Albert showed us it was possible with grit and grind, love and generosity. Dreams do come true, but it takes a village – and a Regenerative state of mind.

The things we believed in once were very true – is it possible that some of those beliefs no longer serve the essence of sustainable organic agriculture?

Regeneration Living: Disrupting Our Paradigms in 2021

The word “Regenerative” gets heaved and hoed around like the words sustainable, mindfulness, and groovy. Most of you don’t remember the latter.

At the behest of a trusted colleague, I signed up for a Regenerative Business Summit. It required six hours of my time. I winced at the nomenclature; aren’t there enough regenerative things already?

It was led by an elder who believed in something other than cause and effect. Carol Sanford really rocked my world of understanding.

She believes that most people operate under a worldview that is causing a major shortfall for humans, our economies, societies, and our living Earth.

Carol loves to disrupt things – especially the way we think.

She speculates that the way we are working may be accelerating the wrong path. Even though we think it’s a noble one. We may be ignoring new possibilities – stuck in our own feedback loop.

What happened 20 years ago may not be the right solution for today.

What is a Regenerative Life?
